Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology
Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology (PAG) is a dedicated subspecialty that addresses the unique gynecologic needs of infants, children, adolescents, and young adults. This field bridges pediatric care with gynecologic expertise, recognizing the physical, hormonal, and emotional changes that occur throughout early development and puberty.
The scope of PAG includes evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of a broad range of conditions, such as:
Congenital anomalies of the reproductive tract (e.g., imperforate hymen, Müllerian anomalies)
Menstrual disorders, including amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, menorrhagia, and premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
Pubertal disorders, such as precocious or delayed puberty
Vulvovaginal conditions, including vulvovaginitis, labial adhesions, lichen sclerosus, and dermatitis
Ovarian masses and cysts
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) in adolescents
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and prevention strategies
Contraceptive counseling and menstrual suppression, especially for those with special healthcare needs
Education and care around sexual development, consent, and safety
Gender-affirming care and support for LGBTQ+ youth in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams
PAG specialists emphasize developmentally appropriate communication, privacy, and confidentiality, while also working closely with families to ensure that care is respectful and supportive. In addition to medical management, surgical intervention may be required for certain conditions, often using minimally invasive or pediatric-specific techniques.
The goal of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology is to promote reproductive health, normalize puberty-related changes, and manage any gynecologic concerns with sensitivity, skill, and an understanding of both medical and psychosocial contexts.
